Cabinets with mesh fronts. The mesh can be made of numerous materials—wire, stainless steel, wood, plastic—and come in endless patterns. The mesh lets you quickly see the cabinets’ contents, provides ventilation and takes away the heavy look of solid doors.
Double islands. Homeowners with large kitchens and open floor spaces plans know the convenience and joy of an island. Now, if you’ve got the space, how about two islands? (A matching pair looks best.) They’ll double all the wonderful ways you use one island!
A sink skirt instead of bottom-cabinet doors. This one might come as a surprise. Its appeals lie in how it relaxes a kitchen motif, adds a pinch of nostalgia, and offers the ability to switch them out for changes in patterns, colors and textures.
Built-in or free-standing pantries. These larders have many advantages: Most of your food items are stored in only one or two places, they can open up walls for free space or decorative items, and they blend well in open-plan living areas.
Recessed or no handles. Upper and lower cabinets with sunken handles or push-open-and-close doors emphasize simplicity and a streamlined look.
