Blueprinting Your Bathroom Reno Yourself? Take These Tips!

If you’re an enthusiastic do-it-yourselfer who wants to map out your bathroom reno yourself and then have Valley Design Center take over from there, here are some points to keep in mind.

 

Measure accurately

Incorrect measurements—major and minor—can spell disaster. Here are just a few possible unwanted results: water fixtures that are too big or little; a wrong-size door; not enough room between the toilet and the vanity; a piece of storage furniture’s drawers hinder movement in the room when they’re open.

 

Consider proper placements

For example, rather than the toilet and/or shower being visible when the door is open, place them out of eyesight. A bathroom with a window but no exhaust fan might affect where you put the shower.

 

Shine the right lights

Down-facing bulbs over the vanity are harsh and visually unpleasant. Install several light sources that offer a variety of wattages, ambiances and styles. Have the electrician wire the lights so they can be turned on individually.

 

Size things up

• Large objects don’t belong in small spaces. A huge vanity that’s mere inches from the shower or bathtub looks dominating and awkward. Meanwhile, a freestanding bathtub in a small bathroom makes the room crowded and lopsided. A medicine cabinet above a vanity should be the same width or slightly smaller. Proportion everything to each other. And give the loo user at least 8 inches on both sides.

 

Create separate zones

If the bathroom is large, don’t jam everything against the walls and leave a void in the middle. Zones make a bathroom more welcoming and functional. Up the luxe factor by giving each component—the vanity, shower, bathtub, shower, storage cabinets—its own area. 

 

Consider the current infrastructure

This is a crucial one. Before mapping everything out, know where the studs, plumbing and electrical structures are behind each wall. If you want or need to move the existing locations, the changes will add time and money to the project.
