The kitchen is the most popular common room in many people’s homes. That’s why the mere thought of its being out of commission during a renovation is enough to make homeowners recoil in horror.
We at Valley Design Center know how to make your kitchen reno as painless as possible. Because after all, we are Manhattan’s experts in residential kitchen and bathroom remodeling, and our showroom has all of your upscale necessities and accessories. Inconveniences are inevitable, but they needn’t spoil your home life. Take a look at these tips!
If your remodeling won’t take what you consider a long time, set up a mini-kitchen. As fun and alluring as it sounds, constantly eating out can “get old”—not to mention the dent it will put in your finances. Sure there’s always take-out, but you’ll still need a preparation area for your morning cuppa joe, assembling school lunches and putting together snacks. Equip it with some detached shelves, and folding tables and chairs. Tell your family to not expect elaborate meals. Assure everyone that you’ll all get along fine with just the basics.
If your remodeling will take what you deem a long time, create a temporary kitchen. If your kitchen remodeling will take more than two weeks, all the shuffling around required to turn a spare room into a kitchen will be worth it.
Of course, much of what you relocate to your acting kitchen depends on the size of the room. Your refrigerator is a crucial component of a kitchen, so start by relocating the fridge to the new quarters. If it’s not easily portable, buy or borrow one that’s small and inexpensive.
Use a microwave, toaster oven, air fryer, slow cooker and hot plate as a substitute stovetop and oven. Think twice about including non-essentials such as a waffle iron or cast iron pan. Get into an outdoor picnic mindset!
As with all important projects, organization is key to success. Set up an area with for making cold-cut sandwiches, slicing up fruit and doling out the takeout.
Store nonperishable foods in big, clear plastic bins. Set up a box for paper plates and plastic spoons, knives, forks, napkins, bowls and cups. (Hint: Good-quality implements will make eating seem more refined.) Wash the non-disposables in a cooler filled with sudsy, warm water. Or, as crazy as it sounds, your bathtub or shower can substitute for a sink.
If you have an outdoor grill and weather permits, fire up this summertime staple; it cooks lots of foods as well as an oven.
If anyone in your household gets antsy or exasperated by the inconvenience, remind them that their patience will be rewarded with a stunning, new kitchen they’ll enjoy for years to come.
