Taking on a first-time project has its challenges. And, of course, some projects are more important than others—such as when you’re adding a new bathroom to your home for the first time.
But fear not! Valley Design Center will be with you every step of the way when you buy your needs and wants from us. We offer the best and brightest brands. If you choose to not use one of Valley Design Center’s professional interior designers, you are in charge of the basic decisions. Think about these aspects.
What type of bathroom will it be? A powder room? En suite? Another one for your kids? A powder room for guests? How often will it be used?
Bear in mind its main purpose. If it’s for resale value, investigate what potential buyers are looking for. If you’re not selling any time soon and your crystal ball is on the fritz, stay neutral by not going radical with any style or theme.
If you simply want or need another bathroom, choose components—fixtures, the shower, cabinets, the vanity—that blend well with the rest of your house. An industrial-style bathroom would stick out in a Craftsman home.
If you plan to age in place, get bright lighting, no-slip floors, grab bars in the bathing area, low counters, and a built-in bench in a shower with a curbless or low-threshold entrance.
Will bigger be better? If your existing bathrooms are too small and/or have insufficient storage space, counter that by giving your new one lots of room to roam and/or oodles of area to stash stuff.
Know your budget—and stick with it. Don’t bother checking out features you can’t afford. You’ll just get frustrated and maybe even make some bad decisions. Always have up to 20 percent more money on hand to cover any last-minute, unforeseen costs.
If you want to build the bathroom of your dreams but it couldn’t fit in the allotted space, think about “stealing” the needed space from a room, closet or unused area with which it will share a wall.
Well before construction starts, choose, order and have guaranteed arrival dates for the new bathroom’s every single element. You’ll be making specific decisions about lighting, fixtures, flooring, paint colors, the bathtub style, the type of shower, storage areas, the sink, mirrors, the toilet, tiling, vanities, and glazes and finishes. Think of the nightmare if your construction crew had to take a significant hiatus because a crucial component had yet to arrive.
It’s exciting to picture your home with a brand-new bathroom. But instead of keeping your eye on the prize, every detail must be considered and taken care of before construction begins.
