OK, so you’re going to stay in your home for a long time—through your “golden years”—and want to renovate your kitchen now. You’re not alone! AARP says that nearly 90 percent of adults over 65 want to remain in their current homes as they grow older.
Valley Design Center has you covered with tons of ways to remodel your kitchen so it best suits your future needs! If you’re not sure about the exact look you want, our expert designers will be happy to offer as much guidance as you need.
Get started by taking a look at these suggestions.
Opt for drawers instead of doors. They let you see and grab all of your eating and cooking utensils in one sweep without maneuvering and contorting your body. The same goes for your pots, pans and small appliances. The drawers just need to be wider than 30 inches. The same pullout solution applies to a pantry: the convenience of easy views of and access to canned goods, boxed items and hefty portable appliances (blenders, mixers, crockpots). Lazy Susans make finding things uncomplicated.
Place the sink near the stove. You don’t want to have to carry a pot or skillet heavy with food and liquid far. Leave workspace between the sink and stove in case you want or need to set it down. In galley-style kitchens, you can also put the sink right across from the stove. And don’t “sink” too far down. Choose a sink that is 6 to 8 inches deep, which will spare you from having to hunch over.
Whether free-standing or built-in, place the microwave at counter height. You’ll be relieved from reaching up and bending down, which can be a physical strain and invite burns and spills.
Don’t get “de-feeted” by dangerous flooring. Tiles should include grout and texture that aren’t prone to being slippery. Vinyl flooring also offers slip resistance, and it’s kinder to your feet and spine.
