There’s no doubt about it: the kitchen is by far the most important room in the home and its appearance greatly contributes to your home’s resale value. These days, new homes are more “kitchen-centric” than ever before. In fact, a new homebuilder’s survey shows that the average kitchen size has grown to a whopping 300 square feet —which is a record high!
With all of this riding on a single room, you may be thinking it’s time for a kitchen renovation, which should start with ways to maximize space. Valley Design Center is here to help with creative storage solutions that are popular add-ons in kitchen design. In fact, many home renovations are now including specialty storage to complement the new cabinetry. Here’s a look at some of today’s hottest trends:
1. Design an Efficient Layout
Think about maximizing traffic flow in the space. Rearranging the layout of the refrigerator, dishwasher, or lower cabinets in your kitchen floor plan can both open up the room and increase opportunities for more storage.
2. Extend Upper Cabinets to the Ceiling
By installing cabinets all the way up to the ceiling instead of standard height, you can gain a significant amount of extra storage space.
3. Add a Kitchen Island
A kitchen island can expand your cooking space by providing a prep area, extra storage, and a place for seating all in one spot. Kitchen islands come in all sizes and can include shelves or drawers for storing appliances, dishes, and pans, as well as space for microwaves, dishwashers, or sinks.
4. Add Open Shelving Above the Sink
Use the bottom shelves for frequently used items and the top shelves for lesser-used items or display items. Open shelving can be also be used anywhere a cabinet doesn't make sense.
5. Optimize the Ceiling
When all else fails - use the ceiling for storage. There are some pot racks on the market that not only provide storage for pots and other cooking utensils, but also provide additional lighting to help with tasks such as food preparation.
6. Install Toe-Kick Drawers
Toe kick drawers are perfect for storing low profile items such as cookie trays, bakeware, trivets and table linens, you name it!
