People who work as lighting directors in films and TV shows create the color, texture and mood of their productions. They use a variety of lighting and effects to focus attention on the action and enhance or reduce color, sharpness, softness and form.
The same applies to the lighting in a home. The inhabitants decide how to show each room in its most flattering light—literally and figuratively. Though we here at Valley Design Center focus on remodeling kitchens and bathrooms, we’re also experts on how to use lighting to complement every room in your home. Lighting can be one of the most important elements. Here are some points to consider.
What kind of atmosphere do you want a room to create? Bright lights are required for rooms in which you need to function, such as kitchens, home offices, playrooms and laundry rooms. Subtle lighting creates relaxed moods in living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms.
Choose lamps that match a room’s decorating motif. Dainty crystal lamps give an elegant space a gentle touch, while lamps with dark, sold wood bases bring a masculine ambiance. If your home’s interior has a contemporary style, sleek metal lamps supplement the look. More traditional lamps suit conventional décor.
Use spotlights to highlight a room’s sophisticated and elegant elements, such as a unique architectural feature, a prized work of art or a gorgeous piece of furniture. Use a floor lamp to highlight and brighten up a dark corner, and cast light on a sideboard with chic buffet lamps.
Use light sources across different levels to create ambiance and interest in a room. Mindful lighting can make the most of a room's size and shape. For example, uplighting (a light placed or designed to throw illumination upward) makes a room look larger, low-hung pendant lights create an appearance of height and clusters of lighting make big rooms seem more intimate.
The kinds of bulbs you use are just as crucial as the lighting source itself. Before you decide on bulbs, consider how many watts are needed (or not needed) to achieve an atmosphere, if energy-efficient bulbs are best for lights that are used frequently and the longevity of a lightbulb that’s on a high ceiling or awkward to reach.
